Musician and new music by Simon Gabrielow

I currently play reed based instruments, concertina, accordion, and more recently a couple of wooden  Chalumeaux [ early precursor to modern clarinet.]  Read all about it here in this section of my artworld webpage.

New original music by Simon Gabrielow

I am a prolific writer of new music, mainly for soloists, on the melodic line.

And many of my pieces are also illuminated with my own illustrations.

Simon Gabrielow - is not only a visual artist but also a self-taught musician with many years playing and writing unique music on mainly 'free reed' instruments , and more recently, other reed based instruments.

The Chalumeau is in reality a very simple precursor to the later Clarinet.  The chalumeau is made of wood, and has several holes made into the surface.  It looks very much like a 'Recorder' in appearance, and the fingering technique is similar, however its sound and method of playing is completely different to what you may expect,  on first appearance; for a start it utilises a single Cane reed which is [ on modern versions] topped by a clarinet head [ where the reed is held]. It is really that simple in its structure that it requires purely the musicians ability to make it really play and to sound clearly. It requires a strength of breath to make the sound, and the reed has to be damp for it to begin to 'speak' adequately.  On first attempt, many Recorder players make the mistake of blowing too gently, and so are surprised by there being no sound produced  at all!  This is because you have to partly grip the tip with the teeth, and part of the lip to seal the area and transfer the airflow into the mouthpiece - and only then you will make the sound.  The sound quality is very unusual and deeper and louder than one may expect for its size in appearance, and it is also very capable of sliding from one note to the other by the slightest use of fingers [for slurs or portamento effects].

The Spring Cuckoo music by Simon Gabrielow

The Spring Cuckoo - is a newer work written for a soloist .

It s a quirky, eccentric, tune, with a repeated distinctive call of the Cuckoo bird repeated several times within its page of notes.

This manuscript has since been illustrated, in colour representing the Cuckoo itself.  Combining art forms in multiple creative disciplines, makes the work have a more striking appearance and brings together the related arts into one harmonious concept on the page.

The spring Cuckoo  is my musical work for a soloist on any melodic instrument in the treble clef range.

It exists also as a Duo [ for two instruments]

Here the page has been illuminated with a colourful illustration of the Cuckoo bird itself.

The combining therefore of two creative art forms into one harmonious work on the page [ That of music and painted illustration].
